Mortgage modification offers may sound tempting, until the consumer is hit by unexpected fees. Homeowners are being misled into believing there are companies associated with the federal government or the federal stimulus package that are prepared to help those in financial distress. The Pennsylvania Department of Banking (DOB) points out consumers are being charged for services otherwise free through professional housing counseling agencies certified by the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA).   (05/15/09)

Individuals, businesses and local governments seeking federal relief under The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, signed into law on February 17, 2009, will find assistance in the form of tax credits, grants and financing. The “who, what, when, where, and how” of securing funding through the federal recovery plan has been streamlined into a 34-page document outlining preliminary grant opportunities.   (04/22/09)
